How to keep pests out of your home
Outside
- As seeds attract rodents, be sure to keep bird feeders away from your house.
- To deter termites, use treated mulch. As an alternative, select pine bark mulch. This has lignin in it that discourages termites.
- Be proactive. Dispose of any discarded pieces of wood from under your house, deck, or crawl spaces.
- Store firewood away from your home, not leaning against it.
- To remove shelter for insects, maintain shrubs or bushes away from the edges of your house. This helps restrict air flow, preventing moisture problems that may attract pests.
- Diseased plants and rotted fruit from trees or bushes attract pests, dispose of these immediately.
- Rake and remove leaves.
- To prevent flies and other pests, clean up pet droppings in your yard.
- Guard against flying pests, install screens on floor drains, windows, heating and air conditioning vents.
- Check around windows and doors, and use weather stripping to seal openings.
Inside
- As pet food left in the garage attracts mice or other pests, make sure to use sealed containers.
- Maintain and clean around air vents.
- Remove opportunities for pests to hide or find food by tidying up your house.
- Using a cleaner that has a disinfectant or bleach component, clean baseboards, corners, and high points in cabinets and closets. Be sure to seal openings if possible.
- Exclusion. Seal and close openings along the walls of your home.
- Maintain branches from trees that touch or hang over your home. They assist in providing access points to your attic where squirrels, bats, or other pests may find a way in.
- Store garbage in sealed bags, and empty frequently.
- Eliminate food and shelter sources. Do not store newspapers, paper bags, or boxes for an extended time.
- Prior to bringing new packages or sealed food into your home, inspect the new containers for pests.
- To reduce moisture in crawl spaces, increase ventilation areas.
